Happy New Year 2009

Happy New Year! 2009 is a new beginning! We get a new calendar and we collectively take a deep breath and sigh - consciously or subconsciously - saying "Boy, I'll never do that again!" or "Next year things will be different!" We make New Year's resolutions and somehow fail to notice that they are the same unachieved resolutions we made last year and the year before that, ad infinitum (or ad nauseam, depending on your mood).

Why do human beings have such trouble changing when change is the most constant factor in our lives? The answer is because we want control over our lives, while denying many of life's realities. Facing the realities of life can be overwhelming. Faith and hope protect us as we chart a new course to change negative thoughts, habits and actions into positive ones.

The first step in the process of change is awareness of our own behavior and the thoughts which produced the feelings that led to the behavior. If we really want to change, we must recognize and accept our feelings. When we accept our feelings, we can change our thoughts and it will be easier to achieve our New Year's resolutions. I am looking forward to 2009 and wish you a healthy, peaceful and prosperous year.

Until next time,
Peggy
